At Del Mar Center for Behavioral Health, we are committed to using evidence based programs to help the children and families we serve get the most bang for their buck; to ensure progress is made using programs and strategies that are rooted in the science of behavior analysis. One such program is PEAK, Relational Training System. Some of our leadership staff has already gone through the Level 1 Certification Training for the PEAK program!

One of our stellar RBTs who is also a BCBA Student created this one-page handout that provides an overview of PEAK and short description along with FAQs. Click the link below my signature to take a look!

Stay tuned for more in-depth handouts for each of the modules! And big thanks to Britni for putting it together!

    January 2, 2017

Come join us for a skills group for kids / teens aged 11 years to 15  years old! This group will be using the Unstuck and On Target curriculum which helps kids and teens learn about cognitive flexibility. These include skills like being able to move on from a topic or idea, compromising skills, planning techniques, and being able to see the “gray” rather than only black and white. You do not have to be a current client with us as this group is open to the public. The group will run for 6 weeks from 4pm-5:30pm at our Jacksonville, NC location.

Fees will be calculated using a sliding scale to take family income into account to help make this accessible to as many people as possible in our community.

To learn more and to complete the survey to determine your cost, contact Dr. Tagg at drbecca@delmarbehavioralhealth.com or 910-378-2501.

    Top 3 Books for Parents

    December 18, 2016

Looking for books to put on your list for Santa? Here are our top 3 recommendations.

The Whole Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Brain. Written by Daniel J. Seigel, MD

In this pioneering, practical book, Daniel J. Siegel, neuropsychiatrist and author of the bestselling Mindsight, and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson offer a revolutionary approach to child rearing with twelve key strategies that foster healthy brain development, leading to calmer, happier children. The authors explain—and make accessible—the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The “upstairs brain,” which makes decisions and balances emotions, is under construction until the mid-twenties. And especially in young children, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain. No wonder kids throw tantrums, fight, or sulk in silence. By applying these discoveries to everyday parenting, you can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth. Complete with age-appropriate strategies for dealing with day-to-day struggles and illustrations that will help you explain these concepts to your child, The Whole-Brain Child shows you how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that your children can lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives.

Mindful Parenting: Simple and Powerful Solutions for Raising Creative, Engaged, Happy Kids in Today’s Hectic World. Written by Kristen Race, PhD

A mindful approach to parenting that helps children (and their parents) feel happier, healthier, calmer, and less stressed in our frenetic era. Rooted in the science of the brain, and integrating cognitive neuroscience and child development, Mindful Parenting is a unique program that speaks directly to today’s busy families who make up what Dr. Race calls “Generation Stress.” Research has shown that mindfulness practices stimulate the prefrontal cortex of the brain. Regular stimulation of this part of the brain helps us feel happier, healthier, calmer, less anxious, less stressed, and makes it easier for us to concentrate and think clearly―the very behavior we are hoping our children will display.

Positive Discipline. Written by Jane Nelson, EdD.

For twenty-five years, Positive Discipline has been the gold standard reference for grown-ups working with children. Now Jane Nelsen, distinguished psychologist, educator, and mother of seven, has written a revised and expanded edition. The key to positive discipline is not punishment, she tells us, but mutual respect. Nelsen coaches parents and teachers to be both firm and kind, so that any child–from a three-year-old toddler to a rebellious teenager–can learn creative cooperation and self-discipline with no loss of dignity.
